INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2021

UTS Celebrates International Women’s Day 2021

“If you believe that women deserve a voice, choice, and safety, then you are Generation Equality.” These words represent the ‘get on board for gender equality’ campaign activated by UN Women.

Today it’s International Women’s Day

On this day around the world, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and the progress they have made. On this day we are reminded of the important battle against sexism and harassment, support towards women’s leadership, and education for the next generations. We must all support an equal work culture, so that together, we can make gender equality, a reality.

The theme for 2021 is #choosetochallenge, as the UN states “A challenges world is an alert world and from challenge comes change.”

Did you know that women earn 23% less than men globally? Did you know that almost 60% of women around the world are earning less, saving less and have a greater risk of falling into poverty? And that one in three women experience gender-based violence?

Women around the world want and deserve an equal future free from stigma, stereotypes and violence; a future that’s sustainable, peaceful, with equal rights and opportunities for all. To get us there, the world needs women at every table where decisions are being made.

This year the UN has a special focus on women during COVID-19. Many women are operational as front-line workers, health professionals, community volunteers, caregivers and many more. They are making an extremely important contribution to the outbreak, but due to this pandemic they have a high risk of being infected, losing their job, and becoming a victim of domestic violence.

Today, let us thank not only the women who risk their lives for us, but to all women. To our mothers, grandmothers, sisters and friends. Without them we wouldn’t be here today.

UTS strives to promote and encourage gender equality within all our events and initiatives, it is not enough to simply speak about equality, we must lead by example and take action.

So, we ask you, how will you contribute towards a gender equal world? Let us take action together!
